Sharon Zargary is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Israel.

“Bronze is a challenging material. It has a classic presence, and makes the sculpture eternal, it occupies time. Making something modern with such a classic material is interesting. I had the same experience with marble. It brings up associations of figurative sculptures and impacts what you imagine making from it, and it’s a challenge to break these preconceptions and create something different.”

His work contains graphic language, symbolism, and images associated with sexuality and masculinity, often drawn from popular culture such as the wheel, boxer, deer hunter, cowboy, Subaru, Marlboro, etc. Yet despite their affinity to pop, his works are charged with criticism and political subtext and enhanced with irony and humor.

Why bronze and why now?

Making something modern with such a classic material is interesting. I had the same experience with marble. It brings up associations of figurative sculptures and impacts what you imagine making from it, and it’s a challenge to break these preconceptions and create something different.” Zargary draws inspiration from varied sources. For example, he sees Paul McCarthy as an inspiration, especially the way he draws from pop culture and sexuality and turns it into art. “I deal a lot with the issue of masculinity, especially in pop culture,” he says. Zargary’s bronze series focuses on a phallic, fetish theme, presenting abstract representations that hint at actual tools and objects. “The inspiration came from the sexual world, fetishes, sex toys. I was playing with the idea of taking something functional and presenting it in a way where you can’t use it and it’s just to look at.”

Zargary’s work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in Israel and worldwide and he has won a number of awards including the Bezalel Academy Excellence award and a citation by the J.C.I. for achievements in drawing. He holds a Master’s in Sculpture from the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy, and a BFA from the Bezalel Academy for Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel. SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS 2008: Scholarship from Joshua Rabinowitz Foundation 2007: Commission from CCA Organization to create a video named “SUBARUMAN” 2004: Excellence Award from Bezalel Academy 1982: Citation by the J.C.I. for achievements in drawing
