Assi Meshullam is a contemporary, multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Israel.

“My work in the studio is very ceremonial. It’s ritualistic, the work with the object. I have to believe in the object, just as people once believed in objects. It’s less a set ceremony and more a state of mind. I’m fairly spontaneous, I play music, and things happen as I work. It’s almost a religious experience.”

A large portion of his work focuses on the blurring and tension between opposing identities, categories and boundaries such as the hybridization between man and animal, the sacrificer and the sacrificed, religion and secularism, and the pull of attraction and repulsion.

Why bronze and why now?

In addition to a degree in art, Meshullam also holds academic degrees in archeology and biblical studies and his work is influenced by ancient cultures. Read More

He is interested and inspired by rituals, ancient rituals in particular, often creating gods and totems. Therefore, bronze was very natural for him conceptually, although lack of access had prevented him from using it in the past. 

For this collection, he selected pieces that are inspired by ritual and by archeological remnants, including works from a Tel Aviv exhibition that focused on sacrifices. “The ritualism is connected to bronze, it’s connected to ancient sculpture,” he explains. “Making something from bronze makes it more eternal, above time, and that is something that I want to experience.”

Meshullam has been exhibiting and participating in exhibitions for over twenty years, both in Israel and around the world, and has won a number of significant awards, including the Minister of Culture Award for Visual Arts. He holds a BA in Art and Archeology, and an MA in Biblical Studies from the University of Haifa, Israel.
